Re: A couple of questions...

First of all you say that the girl you bought this from says it's "pretty" old? Just how old? Second, the three position switch says surround right? that indicates it's at least late 80's, early 90's vintage. 3rd question (alright, more than a couple of questions :-P) are you using more than a single pair of speakers?

If you are using two sets of speakrs (2 pairs), and you aren't getting any surround, what may be happening, assuming it's a simple surround system is that, one, you don't have any music w/ surround channel information (you need that for the surround to work, a movie w/ a surround soundtrack for instance on a Hifi VCR). But if not a *true* surround, you may have what is called surround, but it simply widens the stereo seperation between the existing 2 channel setup. or it's simply not working at all. If you into Home Theater, then it's important, otherwise, don't worry about it. 2 channel is fine for music reproduction anyway.

What a basic dolby surround, assuming that's actually it, is that you get the full frequency range in the front 2 channels, a partial frequency spread-in mono to the two rear surround speakers. This arrangement simply allows the sound to envelope you a bit more. THX and Dolby AC-3 (or 5.1 surround) uses a center, a pair of stereo front speakers, a pair of stereo (or two channels split between both rear speakers) and a center channel speaker. This allows the sound much more realism from dolby surround movie soundtracks.

I think you have either a simple 2 channel stereo "surround" or a simple, earlier 4 channel surround system and w/ a 4 channel surround system, you need two pairs of speakers and surround sound software to take advantage of it.

Hope this helps.

John.
