Home Digital Drive

Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

Sure, no problem! There is a lot to be said.......

..on the Transport issue. First of all, let me start by telling you that whoever came up with Transport/DAC combo was VERY clever, but not in terms of quality, but in terms of making money. There is nothing better than "simple" and so adding DIF (Digital InterFace) Transmitter, Receiver and a Cable (ranging from a few to thousands $$) is not really contributing to the pure undistorted sound. We even had some people suggesting longer Digital Cable in order to prevent/reduce jitter, WOW. There is no better cable than NO cable, no better capacitor than NO capacitor, no better stage in the signal path than NO stage. In general, everyone is going after "The straight wire with gain".

Coming back to you questions, YES power supply is VERY important, in fact, it is as equally important as the signal processing stages. Most people do not realize that there is "no spoon", another words, there is no signal. For example as soon as the signal from your CD player hits the first gain or unity gain stage of your preamp, that signal is GONE FOREVER, it does not pass trough the Tube or the Transistor or the capacitor, but it's being used JUST to control that device so depending on your power supply this device will TRANSFER the applied signal to the next stage and also will add its non-linearity and distortions because it is impossible to follow that input 100%. I am trying to be as simple as possible so it is more understandable.

Vibrations, oh YES, VERY important - the less - the better. Very few companies are modifying the Laser Pick up in order to fit their custom transports, not because the transport becomes better, but in order to have their own “OEM” part which is not interchangeable. For example “A company” is changing the plastic gear lever on the Sony pick up in order not be interchangeable with that same Sony pick up which you might find for cheaper price. Usually, when the companies are using certain CD/DVD transport manufacturer, they do not go for the Pick Up only, they go for the ENTIRE CDM (CD Mechanism) because the companies producing these devices do not sell just the Pick up, but the ENTIRE CDM. Then they put it in a nice machined box, a few well known capacitors, regulators, precision clock and Bingo!

In conclusion, the Sony CDP models that I suggested earlier carry ALL of the qualities you and me are concerned about, except precision clock. I would even say that this CDM developed by Sony was, and still remains the best in the World ever, but this is just the way I feel.

Well, I can certainly go on and on and on, especially on the DACs, but it’s late and need to get some sleep...:-(

If you have more questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Till then, try to enjoy the Music!

Alex
