THEY (The industry) will kill the CD format if we like it or not!
It's not about a better format, it's all about making again huge amount of money (profits). Philips and Sony milk the 'RED BOOK Patent Cash Cow', until the last drop (profit) is expelled. That's the way it works.
Are these new formats, speak DVD-A and SACD, better than the Red Book Format? Well, I sure hope so. The big question for the industry is now, will we be buying big time into yet another format? Remember, many of us replaced their music libraries once before from vinyl to CD, because we were made to believe, that CD sounds sooooo much better! Yeah right! I can put a piece of vinyl onto my turntable rig and blow away any CD rig, rgardless of make and price. That' the difference between infinite information against chopped liver (18/18/20/24 - 44.1/96/192 or whatever hacked up format).
But as they say, 'the proof is in the pudding'.
If you can get emotionally involved into the music, and can listen to it for hours on end, than you have found a piece of gear, you can cherish, regardless of format. I for myself rather spend ten thousand dollars or so for a premium turntable, tonearm and cartridge instead investing in a silly expensive player, which craps out on me, after some years of playing time. I just bought from somebody 3500 (!) pieces of classic and jazz vinyl for 2000 $. Approx. 2800 LP's never opened yet.
Well my friends, that's big listening pleasure, for years to come. Meet that!
Do I have a great 'sounding' CD player? Of course I have! Did I put SACD and DVD-A up against my turntable rig? I sure did, many times by now! Do these new digital formats smoke my vinyl playback system? Wishful thinking! Not a chance!
