Home Digital Drive

Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

I find it hard to relate...

...to what you describe. To me, both good digital as well as analog try to attain the summit of perfect reproduction and fail in different areas. Analog fails in absence of noise, lower dynamic range and weaker bass. Digital fails in harshness in the highs. The emotional involvement that you allude to is possible with both mediums. In addition to being a function of the quality of the system, it is affected by your own psychological conditioning at the time of listening. The same passage of Bruckner's ninth which gives me goosebumps after dinner while holding a cognac, will leave me indifferent at 10.30 AM. I think it is dangerous to evalate equipment on the basis of the emotional involvement alone. I also think it is incorrect to say that a good CD player sounds "analog".
