Yes! If the postman drops your CD it might skip some music. Likewise if the postman drops your Ethernet cable it might skip some packets.
That's why high-end designer Ethernet cables are packaged so nicely. Because the cables are so high-end they will harmonically reverberate endlessly (think microphonics) once dropped. The package protects them.
