RE: I keep hearing that the difference between 24 bit and 32 bit digital recording is negligible

I'm going to try to respond to both your posts in this single reply.

I bought the Korg to replace a Tascam CDRW recorder and consider the phono section available a very significant bonus in the deal. I've commented many times in vinyl asylum that I've had an interest in using a MM as second cartridge in my system.

My intention is to characterize the performance of the recorder, ie. an improvement in recordings due to going to greater bit depths without significant increases in file size. I just completed my 7th .dff recording. I plan on generating 5 digital LPs for each recording in this phase 24/44.1, 24/44.1 + Korg Aqua dither, 24/44.1 + TPDF dither (2nd dither choice), 32f/44.1 and 32f/48. I am planning on 8 to 10 recordings in my initial music library update. That's 40 to 50 digital albums before I even put them (and the .dff files - what a bonus if I can get them to play in my music player) in my audio system. At that point I can begin to characterize both the performance of the recorder and the DACs being used in the main system.

Vinyl playback in my audio system is my reference. I established that reference years ago comparing various TTs, arms, cartridges and phono section. It's what I like about vinyl - and there are vinyl systems more famous and more expensive than mine that I don't like and I'd rather listen to 16 bit digital than spend time with those players.

However if I am satisfied with the performance of my DACs with the new music files (and of course the new recorder) I will consider getting a high output MM cartridge (and connect the TT cables to the Korg) before attempting a DAC upgrade. Currently I don't have a high output phono cartridge and the XX2 + Exposure phono stage is part of my reference system.

I need to pull the 16 bit recorder off the shelf before I jump to a new phono cartridge. At that point every thing else is gravy to me. It's just the process I am going to go through. Questions, comments and criticisms appreciated. Thanks for your helpful responses.

BTW - I am reading and considering your responses. I appreciate them but I really want to keep the 32f in the mix. And the dither I just want to hear the effects. It's extra work for me than just going with 24/44.1, which might be what I end up doing, but it doesn't matter if I get something out of the experience. I have an ESS DAC in my streamer that supports 32f and higher resolution (including DSD) and my music library is connect via the USB - but who knows what is going to happen when I put 32f in the mix and if those .dff files will even be recognized by the music players.

**NOTE** - About the exact moment I posted this response a I heard a noise that started quiet but increase rapidly and got loud - thought we were having a plumbing issue. But it was the left channel of the Exposure DR4 amp I've been using. Disconnected from the preamp but plugged in when turned on it does the same thing just keeps getting louder until I turn it off. Turn it back on again and it repeats. The system was on and the line input was on the TT which was spinning without a record on it when this happened. Lucky I have a decent backup amp. Looks like I better get these guys into the shop. I bought the Prima Luna preamp because the Exposure Pre had developed a noisy pot. I suppose this eventually happens to gear when it gets well past 20 years old.
