Let me recant that thought

As the ADC full scale is an absolute voltage and it's noise floor will be 20 or 21 bits below (?) below that. So, a low recording level isn't going to push the signal down to a range where 32 bits is going to retain something lost by 24 bits.

As for your findings, what happened when you turned the volume up? Listening at low volume will change the frequency balance.
