Roon and custom metadata - potential nightmare?

I've been using Bluesound/BluOS for six years but am now going to move to the Roon platform because of its more powerful search and sort options. HOWEVER, I've been reading about problems with Roon's ability to handle custom metadata tags in local (e.g. NAS) music libraries, especially custom album titles and breaking out bonus tracks into separate albums. What's been your experience?

And Roon is not supposed to modify your local library files but I'm reluctant to move to Roon if there's even a remote chance it could. I've spent many hours fixing and customizing my music library metadata, including improved cover art images, and the last thing I need is to have Roon corrupt the data. Is this a potential problem or will Roon behave itself?

And lastly, is there a process whereby I can use Roon to gather metadata missing in my local music files and then update the missing tags myself using MP3tag?
