No, the Ares is anything but dull and dark. My friend has an Ares II and although I've never heard it, our conversations seem to indicate both DAC's seem to be cut from the same cloth sonically. As I've mentioned the II has adjustment features the original lacks. My friend informed me that the original was pre-set in the OS mode.(oversampling) It so happens he prefers the OS mode as well combined with the slow filter.
