RE: Border Patrol DAC - USB or SPDIF better?

Hi,

I don't own this.

However looking at the chipset's (1) and doing a technical analysis, USB SHOULD be better. The SPDIF receiver has not so great jitter rejection, compared to other option, the USB is asynchronous, so clock should be close to perfect.

If using SPDIF cable and spdif output quality will be crucial, not in the sense of expense, but in the sense of requiring a low jitter, correct impedance source and a cable + connectors that are correct impedance. Correct 75 Ohm BNC sockets are preferred.

Of course, listening may ultimately contradict technical analysis.

That said, seeing that the SC version gives you more than just "SPDIF" and seeing the relative extra cost (around 20%), I'd go shopping for a deal on an N100SC to minimise my extra expense, while keeping my option open. Even could be to see if in future a TDA1541 based DAC (like a used Zanden 5000) may offer a further upgrade (no USB on that).

At 20 bits, you are on the verge of dynamic range covering fly-farts-at-20-feet to intolerable pain. Really, what more could we need?
