Are you using an Apple adapter? Other brands are known to not always work. Are you sure the cable is good?
But you should be OK with settings. These are more plug-n-play than computers since there is only one port and by default it is selected.
The E30 can decode anything thrown at it so it isn't a format issue either. I have an E30 and I have an Apple camera adapter but I haven't tried the two together. I use an Audioquest Dragonfly Black in the car with the adapter and it sounds great with Qobuz on my phone.
