RE: HDMI ARC to USB DAC?

I believe that it's both, as it carries meta-data about the sending and receiving devices hardware so they can 'talk' to each other when implementing hardware codec / capabilities ... my understanding is that it was first developed for computer graphics as those became more sophisticated and necessary as SOC have rolled out to projectors, game consoles, video cameras ... even remote controls
