Thanks for the replies and suggestions. I took the transport apart, not difficult and the lens on the laser assembly looked to be 'pristine'. It does not looked clouded, filmed, or have any crud on it - checked by viewing in different angles etc.

Cleaned the lens with alcohol and gently dried. After reassembly and test, it did the same thing. So I guess it's not the lens.

I guess I should try a new laser as it's not too expensive.
