Yes indeed, a clean lens is essential. The OP should also check on the same issue with the disc or discs he was trying. A disc that has some sort of dirt on it may play without trouble on one machine but with errors on another.

When discs need cleaning (rare now as most of my collection has been ripped to NAS) I have always relied upon Disc Doctor Miracle CD Cleaner. It does not leave any sort of "optical enhancer" on the disc surface.
