They have "sort of" improved over the past ten years...... I thought they actually regressed in quality between the 1990s and 2010....... There was huge hype for "asynchroous sample-rate conversion" ("upsampling") DACs up to around 2010, but fortunately that "technology" is no longer in vogue.... DSD and ladder designs have set things back on the right track.

There are a lot of good "budget" DACs now..... Topping, Schiit, SMSL, and Denafrips come to mind..... (I use a SMSL Sanskrit 10th MK II DAC in the headphone rig. This $120 DAC IMO puts out SQ that couldn't be had for $500 just several years ago.) Have not heard enough expensive DACs to say if they have improved in recent time.
