Home Digital Drive

Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

RE: Digital Gargling

- As others have mentioned, I would first look at the USB cable length. If you know it's at the limit, get it well within spec first then try other things.

If that's difficult to do because of distance between your computer and the DAC, how about moving the computer closer to the DAC and use a short USB cable for testing? Or move the DAC closer to the computer and use long analog interconnects from the DAC into your audio system. Additionally, try your testing with typical 16/44.1 CD quality music rather than "hi-res".

- You might also want to try another USB port on the computer for your DAC. If they're all in use, try swapping devices onto different USB ports. Or better yet, if possible remove all USB devices except the DAC for troubleshooting purposes. The main idea is to avoid having the DAC share a USB controller in the computer with other USB devices. Easy to see on the Mac, probably on a PC too but I don't run Windows for audio so I can't say how it's done in Windows 10.

As you can see in the screen shots below, the DACs are by itself under USB Hi-speed Bus > Hub > DAC.

Example USB device tree on Mac + PS Audio DAC:

Example USB device tree on Mac + Ayre DAC:

On the Mac, click on the Apple icon in the upper left of your screen then choose About this Mac > System Report > then choose USB from the left column.

Is your computer ON 24/7? If so, when things go really wonky, try rebooting. [Although, when I ran my Mac Mini for audio I left it ON 24/7 with no issues].
