RE: High end CD Players and Transports

I just fixed a couple of higher end vintage CD players, and got a chance to compare them to the transport and DAC in my system. It is impressive how different, and good, they sound.

Personally I think there was a transition in technology, moving from focusing on simplicity, performance, and sound quality, to more affordable and easier to mass produce. Unfortunately that 'affordable' required a lot of complication to try and bring the sound quality up, which it really isn't able to do. I look at it as musicality vs precision (with a hard P).

Many haven't heard, or don't remember, the sound quality of these old units. Those that have and remember likely create this demand. Transports and players are mechanical with moving parts and consumables (lasers), and do need occasional attention. Not so big a deal, considering what you get. Much of the newer stuff seems pretty disposable when it fails, which says something.

Just my opinion, of course...
