Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

Marantz CD Players

I'm looking to replace the Philips DVD player in my office system (all the things one dislikes, flimsy tray, slow as hell to read and react). Arguably it sounds fine whether from its analog out or through a Topping D30, I just hate it as a cd player. It has become painfully obvious that there aren't a lot of affordable choices out there for new production cd players. It's either expensive multi-function streamers and such or mass production below $500 that are not built like what $500 was 20 years ago...

I figured to move my Heart CD6000 (Marantz) from the main system and bring a little tube warmth to the SS office system (B&K PT-3 sII/Adcom GFA-535 II, Wharfedale Denton 80th) and get something new for the living room. As the amplification is tubed (Anthem Pre2L/Cary SLM-100)I figured I could live with a standard CDP. I was perfectly content with my old Pioneer PD-54 until it died and only got the Heart 6000 because an opportunity presented itself. Still miss that Stable Platter mechanism.

I'm thinking the CD5005 would be fine and I don't need the USB support or headphone amp in the 6006. Everything I can find would indicate they are otherwise the same unit. The other question would be the HD-CD1. It is still available at the same $400 as the 5005 and random comments I have found would lead me to think it is essentially a 6006 in a compact chassis.

Any thoughts on these three, or suggestions on other sub-$500 CDP to consider? Seems like Yamaha, Denon, Teac/Tascam, and Cambridge are the only other players in that space.
