Another winner -Charles should write a short book on the tech-history of digital, in the post 1980 era. (The year Red Book was spec'd)
And HDCD was NOT the only format to fool people. So did Sony, making us think that DSD was a 1-bit system (in practice). Problem is it was 5-8 bits right away -meaning it decimated and over-sampled. (2) things we were told it would not do.
In other words, it's just a low-bit PCM system.
And extreme sampling rates. Whoops ! Mikes don't have sensitivities beyond 25khz, at least those used by audiophile labels.
Can't dither an (ADC) 1-bit path.
Sonny never provided recording units sampling at 192knhz or beyond. (Maybe these exists now -but are rare, I think and expensive).
Even though DSD is mostly gone, we're still suffering -aren't most ADCs hybrid delta-sigmas ? It's true that some labels never used these -they stood with 20-bit recorders. But how many are there ? How labels are, in my opinion, are doing it right ?
