All,
I've owned a Philips CD-880 player since 1989 that delivered wonderful music however over the last couple of weeks it was having problems playing multiple CDs with not reading, distortion and skipping. A few nights back it stopped reading any CD I loaded into it so I'm assuming the CD laser or drive finally gave up the ghost.
I found some posts on other sites that referenced a problem with a 33uF cap on the laser/servo board which I did replace however this didn't fix the problem. It seems the issue is with the servo / swing arm for the laser that doesn't move when a CD is inserted.
So I'm looking for suggestions on a replacement CD player, or perhaps it is time to move to a digital music library / network attached storage. Since I'm not working at the moment I'm going to limit my cash outlay to around $500 - and that may mean just a standalone player.
As for my system, here is what's in my living / listening room:
Speakers: Kef 105's from 1980 (yeah, the originals).
Amplifier: Class D Audio SDS-440C 220 W/pc amp. (Replaced an ancient VSP Labs Trans-MOS 150 amp this year that lost its sonic imaging long ago and developed a noisy channel ).
Preamp: Adcom GFP-565. Also have a turntable / head amp for playing vinyl.
In doing some searching I've come across the Marantz CD6006 at my price point that seems to have some stellar reviews and there are two stores in town that have it. I'm open to suggestions and thoughts on a replacement CD players for my Philips CD-880. Back in the day I did listen to a Hitachi CD player (based on the Sony 16 bit / 44 KHz sampling rate) and it really didn't sound good with classical recordings so I've stayed with the Philips design over the years with a couple of 14 bit oversampling players prior to the Philips CD-880.
Thanks in advance,
Bob
