RE: They are hard to beat

Sad to hear. I replaced a 1986-7 Magnavox CDB650 with a series of CD players in the $500-2500 range made in between 2002 and 2011. To my shock and disappointment, despite what the audio press said about improvements in DAC technology, all were a step down. Some lacked bass, others had a shrill fatiguing treble. Some were more detailed, but none had the nice combination of warmth and dynamics of the Magnavox. Wish I still had that Magnavox. Perhaps you could repair yours.
