RE: New CDP or DAC?

Dac would make most sense. Look for something used.
CDs just like vinyl are not dead. If you spend a lot optimizing your computer setup and use a cheap CD player as a transport, the rips will sound better. But get a top quality transport, CDs can sound better.

I see way too many people making statements as absolutes, when there are so many variables.

That said, getting a dac with a usb connection will give you many more options, than a $1k CD player.

Start with a dac, with a decent coax cable or Lifatec optical cable. Later as budget allows get a decent usb cable and start experimenting with Tidal and rips of your CD collection.
