In my experience, music on CDs sounds better than the same file via computer, so if a lot of your music is on CD my recommendation is to start with a really good transport. No need then to rip your CDs. I use the Cambridge CXC, which in the audiophile world is a relatively cheap but first class transport, much better than the CD player I used before as a transport. You will need a DAC but that's an easier purchase in a way given the difference among them is much smaller than among transports (in my opinion, of course). Any new DAC will also allow you to play files, access internet radio, etc.
