Home Digital Drive

Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

RE: New to DACs here...for better sound, get better CD player, or get a DAC for current player?

I don't have any experience with Denon Link so don't know how effective it is compared to others. In general they work "well" in that they reduce the jitter significantly, but the reviews I have read show that they are still "worse" than coax links which are still good for up to 24/192.
To be honest, there is nothing wrong with your Oppo as a transport and I wouldn't invest more money in a new disc spinner unless your old one is on the fritz. The future is PC based or Network Streaming so I would focus more on getting a good DAC and making the most of what you have for spinning discs.

Ripping SACDs is not like ripping CDs - they are watermarked so you can't just stick them in your DVD drive and rip normally. You may get an image, but the image won't play due to the lack of watermarking. Your Oppo can do the conversion automatically to PCM 24/88.2 output. That's how I play my SACDs now via my NAD M51 so you won't lose anything. Although there is the perception that DSD is superior to PCM and you will certainly get opinions suggesting that converting SACD to PCM is a bad thing, one thing to keep in mind is that not all SACDs are recorded natively in DSD. Linn for example, record in 24/192 to enable easier editing and then convert after mastering.
