Unlike hardwired logic they're ALL programmable 'multi-function computers' to begin with.
A manufacturer can dedicate it to a single function just like a DIYer can. To what extent this is done and to what level this improves the sound is up to the manufacturer or the DIYer.
But they all start life as a programmable general purpose computer that might end up as a special function device.
Get over it. ;-)
