RE: Anyone heard the Micromega MyDac?

Hello. I had one delivered today and I'm listening as I write.

So far it's made me keep listening. It's doing a lot right as I can tell in my first day of use and limited recordings.

Build is plastic, very light weight and kinda cheap feeling. I like the input options but I'm currently using only USB via my Mac Mini.

At first I was not so thrilled, then I realized I hadn't switched it to USB 2.0 on the back of the unit. A nice difference in staging for sure.

Sound is open, detailed, airy and clean yet not etched, bright or brittle at all. The vocals may be the most impressive as they are very nicely separated and centered image wise with a nice projection from the speakers, yet not too forward. There is no artificial simblance or lispy S's, if that makes sense. Backing vocals are easy to distinguish. Drums and piano are all right in place with good separation as well. The tone is great so far.

The highs are really, very nice and sweet on everything I've listened to. You get the detail without emphasis and I'm confident that they are best I've heard in the modest DACs I've used. I've had many $500 to 2K cd players and I can't recall me wishing I had one of them instead but I'm not doing any a/b tests to know any better.

Soundstage and imaging are also up a notch from what I've heard so far in my current system and room. I hear more height and less coming direct from the speakers. Its how I like it!

Bass is tuneful and quick sounding but I haven't really focused enough on lines much to get a sense of depth or slam on the recordings I've enjoyed so far (my system isn't tuned for high impact bass as it is). Bass is certainly not disappointing but my context is just relative to how I've listened to it today. (Jack Johnson, Bon Iver, The Shins etc.)

My previous most recent computer based DACs were The original Dacmagic, MF VDAC, HRT Music Streamer II and II+. I've also ran the Decco as a pre in to higher end amplification when I had a larger room. My current system is in a smaller room with a Naim Nait 5i (italic) and Neat Motive 1s. I've mostly moved past my early analytic days and really look for a system to involve me in the music vs. the sounds. The two often go hand in hand but it's been many years and systems to get me to stop here awhile.

For the money I haven't heard better. I'll know just how far I think the differences are as I spend more time with it. I know enough now to think it's going to be in this room for quite awhile. I'm glad I heard it before reading The Absolute Sound review. That should be an interesting read.
