T-Bone,I think it boils down to what each person will or will not tolerate from a music playback system. Since my musical tastes have shifted over the years towards classical, I found that vinyl had too many issues for me to enjoy the medium.
Now, when I was listening to more rock/jazz, for many years, I would certainly agree that vinyl sounded a lot better than digital. The occasional pop/click from vinyl was OK, and was not objectionable. There were no quiet extended passages to worry about with that type of music, which is not true of classical.
Over the past five years or so, the landscape for me changed. Musical tastes changed, digital started getting a lot better, and became increasly fustraated with listening to classical with vinyl. The noise and dynamic limitaions became untolerable.
Digital became a better option when the likes of the Modwright Oppo came along. It solved all the noise problems, had clairty similar to a master tape, and the digial artifacts became a non-issue.
When I say I had high quality turntable setups, I'm talking VPI/SME/Grado Reference/Audio Research, etc. They are excellent components, and sounded great (for most music).
I do understand the advantages and limitations of each medium. I'm an engineer by trade, which may be part of the bias issue. From an engineering/measurement standpoint, digital is a LOT better. That is not in dispute from a measurement/numbers standpoint. I get the counter arguments, as for years, I also was in the vinyl camp. So, in some respects, it is not nonsense as you proffer.
It is a valid difference of opinion on what traits of musical playback are most important. (Again, not a bad thing). Take the engineering argument out of the mix, and there is no right or wrong on what's better. It's whatever moves the listener.
