The biggest sound upgrade you can get is getting a good recording in any medium you can play back!

I have heard even plain old Redbook-CD sound amazingly fantastic (as well as awful).

For me, the biggest difference between mediums is how hard or easy it is to make a good master. I think high resolution digital recordings makes the mastering process easier than anything else (and can be used to make both CD and Vinyl masters! (and they do!))
