Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

RE: CD's in a new fangled portable universe...

CD's still make sense to me although I'm now also buying downloads.

I see no reason to rip my CD collection unless I start having problems with media failures, and I own far fewer than you do. CD's solve the problem with LP's wear issues and playing time and I don't mind walking a few steps to put one on. The last portable CD player I had that really sounded good was that Radio Shack one recommended by Tom Gillet which has sadly died.

I currently have no use for a portable player, but if I ever do I'll buy one with SS memory and just transfer the music I want to take with me from the CD to it. The data actually ends up buffered on the hard drive which can be erased periodically or retained as a pool of 'favorites' with no effort. Data extraction doesn't take very long, your media is safe at home and you have a smaller sized device with better battery life.

Regards, Rick
