Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

Thin and bright?

No, I'm not describing myself for a personal ad ;-)

I've been helping my Mom to replace her aging and malfunctioning Onkyo CD carousel player, circa 1992. Currently we're auditioning both the Onkyo DX-C390 and Marantz CC4001.

Compared to her old player, both of these sound thin and bright. They may not be fully broken in yet (the Onkyo has around 100 hours, the marantz 40). Kinda puts me in mind of transitor radio sound (albeit high-end transistor radio).

Just wondering if anyone's noticed a trend in newer players (vs stuff from 10-20 years ago) toward a thinner, brighter sound.

I suppose we can try to alleviate the problem with correct cable selection.

The system consists of a Creek 4140 amp, DCM Timeframe 350 speakers, MIT Terminator IC, and MIT Zapchord speaker cable.
