The comparison was in FOOBAR. WIth the DS output, it just sounded flat and lifeless. With ASIO, it was a whole new league.
ALso, the system wasn't balanced for any player. It just was the same as it ever was (:)), except I began using the PC. I originally started with ACXO as the player (asio is native) and it sounded way better than Foobar. But a year later I realized that I had never installed ASIO with Foobar. Once I did, Foobar sounded everybit as good. SO I am not sure your "balanced" arguement holds water in my case.
I recently tried WMP 11 and it wasn't anywhere close to neutral. THe bass was overbalanced and boomy. I checked all the settings I could find and turned them all off, but it still sounds bad. I certainly can't get the fidelity I get with Foobar.
I totally agree that ripping is not a huge deal if some sort of error correction is used.
