The most common failure in these drives is the laser mechanism. To buy just the part from Pioneer will be $125 plus shipping. So I don't know that your friend will be able to save any money by having another repair facility do the work.He could try to do the work himself, but would then also probably want the repair manual for another $25. If something goes wrong, he will be stuck. And he doesn't even know for sure what the problem is.
I think your friend is being penny-wise and pound-foolish. To spend $300 on a $4000 machine to have the work done properly at the factory seems like the way to go.
