Home Digital Drive

Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

Still researching, but it seems nearly all benefit from modding - but one company spurns clock upgrades!

So, among the better units, I guess it boils down to which have the best transport mechanisms and which have the best power supplies. But apart from the higher priced Esoteric models, it is hard to find out what transport mechanism are being used.

There was an interesting discussion by Robert Harley in the latest TAS about the importance of that transport mechanism and he was very impressed by the one used in the super expensive Esoteric P-03.

It is VERY hard to decide when you are not in a position to borrow and compare. But if the unit is to be modded anyway, would such a home audition tell much anyway? Reading the raves of some of those who do mods would have you believe the end result of their efforts equals the best money can buy anywhere.

One such review is at

That particular company spurns the use of better clocking mechanisms at www.upgradecompany.com
There, they say:

"The Upgrade Company does not recommend installing a "Superclock" nor any additional wiring nor circuit boards. Doing so simply collects more RF (radio frequency) and EMI (electro magnetically induced) noise and distortion, making the sound "different" but never better. The additional circuitry and wiring with aftermarket "clocks" negatively affects both digital signal and power supply lines because the additional circuitry and wiring perform like receiving antenna's, as all wiring and circuits do, picking up both internally generated and airborne RF and EMI, injecting a lot more noise directly into the data stream and power supply, compounding problems and hurting performance. Also the delay lines they create cause smearing and ringing. Very bad idea. In fact many installers are not aware that these supposed "Superclocks" radiate MORE RF directly into the other circuits and electronic components inside the unit like a sonic jackhammer, dramatically reducing measured and perceived performance. We have a better solution!"

Yet upgrading the clock is generally accepted as one of the first mods to perform!

Most confusing

Do not criticise the idiots in this world - we need them as they make the rest of us look so much better :-)
