It depends if the upsampling becomes "synchronous" at 176.4. Some converters keep the output clock running independently at a "synchronous" frequency, where there wouldn't be much benefit. Since you perceived an improvement, it suggests it does become synchronous at 176.4.
If it does become synchronous, you basically have a 24-bit 4x oversampling DAC, using the "older" terminology.
