In have noticed that a lot of transports use little rubber "grommets" to float the whole assembly, making it shock resistant. As the rubber ages, it dessicates and becomes stiff, losing it's shock absorbent properties. Some players are more affected by this than others... likely due to their different implementation of error correction, or the use of buffering. All that aside, try cleaning and lubing the rail(s) per G Squared's recommendation. Use any light-weight oil to LIGHTLY coat the rail(s) after cleaning. Also clean the pickup lens with a Q-tip moistened with isopropyl alcohol. The key is to be gentle but thorough.
While you're in there, clean the platter/spindle and the underside of the clamp/puck.
Hope this helps!
