Thanks for the thread -- I think my question was answered. The main differences between the regular DAC1 and USB DAC1 seem to be (in addition to the USB option), high current outputs (I guess mainly useful if you're feeding DAC directly to power amp), switchable headphone gain controls, and headphone muting (both of which are not applicable if you're not using it as a headphone amp). So the bottom line seems to be that if you don't need any of this stuff, the regular DAC1 should be just fine.
