HowdyTho my DAC takes AES/EBU on an XLR, my DACs manufacturer said I could just hook up S/PDIF and things would work fine and they do. You might check with Behringer or ask if anyone does it that way with the DEQ2496.
TOSLink isn't necessarily evil and it can be better than S/PDIF if there are any groundloop issues...
