All this really tells you is that straight out of the Mac it is not giving you the quality of a cd. THat doesn't surprise me. YOu really have to add a good dac to eclipse a regular old cdp.I don't think that anyone is saying that a pc with onboard audio is ready for audiophile primetime.
Once you get the pc to a level where it matches or exceeds the cdp, then and only then can you hear differences.
