Home Digital Drive

Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

HDD with excellent DAC = CDP Death

67.84.137.222

Thought this was already beyond common knowledge at this point. I have a heavily modded Sony SCD-777ES and it goes up against an Intel MacMini coupled with a Lavry DA-10.

Flipping from one channel to another in the preamp playing the same song is like almost listening to the exact same source. There is sometimes a slight win to the Sony overall but it's hardly consequential. Considering that the Sony SACD player has underwent two rounds of modifications, I find it difficult to believe the trend lines are already set.

Obviously when it comes to SACD it's no contest but otherwise, I don't see the need to go with expensive CD players anymore.

In addition to the high quality an intel MacMini/Lavry DAC produces, there's the jukebox quality of having thousands and thousands of songs available at your fingertips. I use a maxtor personal storage 300GB drive and it's quiet and excellent. But considering you can get a 500GB hard drive for less than $150, well that's tough to top.

Sound quality plus the convenience of controlling a 20,000 song library, yes I've surrendered.
