It sounds more sinister than that, I'm afraid. I have not had any problems with those machines but it could be that a surge has taken out a fuse among other things. The fuses are not user replacable. It could also be a bad component such as a capacitor, a resitor, a loose connection, a broken solder joint, a failed laser assembly. Too many possibilities for you to consider. Send it in for service.
