As a waiter with 25 years experience, I've often wondered why restaurant tables always have 4 legs (and of course they always wobble!--remember the scene in BIG NIGHT where maitre d' Stanley Tucci goes around inserting match books under the tables before the evening shift?) I guess it would be considered odd or poor engineering practice to use three legs to support a square or rectangular table since in extreme instances it would be less stable, but on average it would be much better.
