Omega Mikro, Shunyata, Elrod? Depends what you NEED

69.218.226.216

I have been thru the holy grail search for all things cable before. To be sure, power cords will make a HUGE difference, but the cable you want to buy depends on what you are trying to accomplish. I've pretty much tried all the major cables from Shunyata, Elrod, elctraglide, Omega Mikro, TG Audio, Audio Magic, Wolffe, Harmonic Technology, Acoustic Zen and too many more to mention. Power cords will vary dramatically with what they bring to the table so you need to consider what it is you think your system needs before buying. In addition, my experience is go BIG or save until you can. Good power cords cost anywhere from $300 on up...on the USED market!

All the power cords I have tried the three that really seem to impact my gear the most over the years are the Omega Mikro, Shunyata, or Elrod power cords. Nothing is faster and more transparent than the Omega Mikro power cords. Nothing benefits the midrange and "realism" of horns, piano, vocals and overall top end shimmer like Elrod power cords. Top level Shunyata (personal favorites are the older Viper V2 and Cobra/King Cobra V2)add soundstage width and depth that are so incredible you'll think you added surround speakers! Also, Shunyata has a unique bass quality that is hard to describe but once you hear it it just sounds RIGHT and you'll never want to be without it again. Personally I mix them up. Elrod to push the power line conditioner, King Cobra V2 to push the amp and Omega Mikro on the front end b/c EVERYTHING else sounds vieled once you hear these and you want as much transparency from the begining as you can get.

The TG Audio SLVR that a previous post mentioned is a good starter aftermarket cord though. I did prefer it to a lesser Shunyata (Black Mamba)b/c it is clean and tight in the bottom end but other than that it does nothing special...which may be a good thing...think of your stock cord on steroids! ;-)

Don't let the price ratio of cables to gear scare you. I once took a $300 Golden Tube Audio tube amp and after sticking a Shunyata King Cobra on it the thing was KILLING amps in the $3000 - $5000 range.

I suggest buying used at first b/c you never know what will work w/ your gear now matter what the reviews say until you get it in our system and synergize it w/ your other cables (remember you hve to play them hard for a week to settle them in, I plug a 100 watt bulb into mine for 4 or 5 days before playing). Buy it and try it...if it works keep it and if it don't by buying used you simply sell it for what you paid and move on. I keep a box of various power cables around to tweak gear b/c over the years I have discovered that EVERY TIME YOU CHANGE ANYTHING all the other stuff needs reconsidered too and it seems to me that the very best power cords are timeless classics that even the manufacturers have not improved upon, just changed.....sometimes not for the better (Shunyata comes to mind here, King Cobra V2 is their best ever IMHO)

Have fun!
