Re: Suggestions for a CD player please

There are a lot reasonable choices to consider. If you buy used, you should be looking at CD players by Arcam, Marantz, Rotel, NAD, Rega, and others. New, you have a few choices. I believe Rotel's RCD-06 lists for $500. I have an RCD-02, its predecessor, and a decent performer (see my review on this site). IMHO, the build quality on the Rotel that I have is excellent for the price. NAD's 542 has some good buzz about it, and also lists for $500. I've even seen NOS Marantz SA-8260's on Audiogon for under $500 (this CD/SACD player has a loyal following, but there have been reliability issues, IIRC). If you're not opposed to more obscure Chinese brands, check out Pacificvalve.us for both a Lite Audio player and a Bada player (favorably reviewed on Affordable Audio) that sports tubes(!). Both sell direct for $500, and have a 30-day return option. This last web site also has some very inexpensive outboard DACs which you could pair with a budget DVD player and still stay within budget (but don't forget a decent digital cable).
