I came across a better resolution image of the unit from this retail site that allows you to see a number of details obscurred by the generally poor images from Toshiba. The site has erroneous information (I think) about the unit supporting HDMI and video upconversion and is probably confusing this model with the next one up in the lineup called the SD-5000.In it you can see the changes/improvements(?) over the 3990 unit:
- Now in default black (versus silver)
- Centrally mounted tray (versus left mounted tray). Before the switching power supply was farther away from the transport.
- 5 digit display (versus 2 digit)
- fewer control buttons on front fascia
Just to re-iterate, it be interesting to see how the new unit compares on the following points(compared to the 3990):
- Transport noise
- Differential DAC scheme
- DC coupled output stage
- Video/Audio chipset(was Zoran)
- Resume from POWERDOWN for video(not supported on 3990)
- gapless playback support
- Sampled audio during fast forward search(not supported on 3990)
- flatness of chassis bottom to support rollerballs
