Home Digital Drive

Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

I tried a similar experiment

I hooked up my Polk XM tuner to my Audio Note DAC, and even though it did sound better, it still sounded like XM running through a nice DAC. I think in the long run you might feel this way too, but you never know. I just run the radio with the internal DAC now because I think the internal DAC is good enough for the XM format.

I actually got the biggest "bang for the buck" improvement on my XM radio by upgrading all of the capacitors on the power supply board. It was relatively cheap and a fun project too. Maybe your Sirius radio could benefit from the same thing. Even if you do use an outboard DAC with your radio the power supply improvement will still make a difference.

If you only need to balance the outputs of the radio you could always get a Jensen Iso-Max transformer (pair). They can be shipped with RCA inputs and XLR outputs. I got mine at Markertek for a couple of hundred bucks. I use it for a different application but for simialr reasons. The Jensen transformers are nice for the money and they provide a little isolation too. Sure, there are better tranies out there, but the Jensen's are way better than what you need for satellite radio. (BTW, I'm not knocking satellite radio. It just IS what it IS. Nothing more or less.)

You know, there are always lots of used Benchmark DAC-1s for sale. That would fit all of your requirements and give you a headphone amp too.

Have fun.
