Experiements with a Kimber D60 Cable

I am posting here because it is more widely read than the cable board.

I have had the Illuminati D60 and Kimber D60 for sometime, in Phono connectors.

Whereas the Illuminati has always satisfied, I was never happy with the slight but dry hf edge on the Kimber which is terminated differently from the Illuminati (different plugs).

I have migatred to BNC connections with a I2Digital cable, connecting my transport with a dCS 972/954 system, upsampled to 176.4 k for CD.

The I2D cable (also by Chris Summavigo, is a very good, analytical cable, gicving clear information on spacial placement. In mt setup, this means height, width beyond speakers, and depth.

I reterminated the Kimber on one end with BNC, outputting via the phono plug and Canare socket (supposedly 75 Ohm) on my 972. The sound changed to somewhat plummy, with less distinct bass and reduced imaging. Good, but not characteric of the D60.

As I did have have a BNC plug that could be used to terminate the other end of the D60, I fitted a WBT 75 Ohm plug and socket set to the system.

This time, imaging is even wider and perhaps more distinct than the I2D cable, with warmer and very easy to listen to audio, no hint of a digital system at all! The result is perhaps less clear and analytical than the I2D but restores fu8lly the reputation of the D60!!!

All this goes to shw the ctiticality of cables and connectors!

Wait till I make the Kimber D60 all BC.

Note: Kimber will reterminete the D60 for a reasonable price. But if you live outside the US, this is much more expensive and not practical. So beuing very careful with termination and socketry, I did it myself.

Note: Instrument type BNC plugs may not work (I didn't even try as there are two layers of heavy silver strands) and I did it with a high quality gold plated plug with solder connections.
