Upgrading cdp changer...Wife Rules

OK, so the bottom line is marital harmony. She says spend up to $1K but it has to be a cd changer. So my almost new Sony scd2000es meets that criteria but there has to be an upgrade that will improve the slight edginess and digital aspect of my rebook and audiophile collection.
Two options:
TRL mod
Get to keep the same box but since my last two transports died due to mechanical snafu’s (drawer or platter drives), if this on goes, there go my mods.
Also, if the latest, greatest cdp shows up next year in my price range and I bite, there go my mods.
DAC
Kind of like this as it is a separate box and all electronic (unless it is tubed). Probably little to go wrong.
Con: It is another box therefore more cables, space.
Seems like a lot of decent electronics out there with good reviews from various parties/inmates. (I kinda’ like van Alstines equipment although I have no real experience with his Dac).
So, from a practical aspect guys, what would be a more logical upgrade?

Monster AVS 2000
