I'd like to second what Luminator said about AC power and isolation from vibration. Dealing with these two things has helped every CD player I've ever owned, and helped a lot, whether the CDP cost $3K or $4C. At present my digital sources have isolation transformers, which have been very effective and inexpensive. If you do decide to go for a DAC, I have been enjoying an Apogee DA-1000E-20 for three years now. There's a review of it on this site. A new Apogee Mini-DAC might also be a possibility. The Apogees are pro gear, little-known in home audio, very well-engineered and well-built.
One more interesting thing I've learnt concerns the length of the cable connecting the transport to the DAC. Music is much less confused if this cable is 1.5 metres long.
