Re: To: Ex owners of Jolida JD-100

I enjoyed the JD100 a great deal, in fact it's the first CD player I ever liked (no kidding!), but found it wanting after an upgrade to my LP chain where I moved from a Denon DL103 cartridge to a Benz Micro Reference 3. As much as I liked the 103 the Ref.3 was a big step forward especially in bass performance.

The 103 and JD100 made for a great synergistic pair and switching between LPs and CDs involved no great sense of loss one way or the other, but after the Ref. 3 I knew the JD100's days in the system were limited.

I took a chance on the Bel Canto CD-1 due to the 1/2 price Christmas sale and got it for around $2500US my thinking being that a $5000 player must have something to offer and that in any event I'd be able to flip if for not too much of a loss if I didn't like the sound.

Happily I like the CD-1 a great deal, it has the bottonm end performance that was manadatoy and is a very neutral and capable performer. It basically has no sonic signature I can detect, it just seems to make the most of any CD you throw at it, very satisfying.

As I listen more it seems the only area where LP beats it is at the higher frequencies but I'm less than convinced that this isn't an attribute of digital in general and specific CDs in particular. Mind you I'm talking subtleties here, i.e. a CD with cleanly captured cymbals will beat the pants of a LP of medicore quality but if it came to a battle of "best-of" recordings the LP would likely win out.

Compared to the JD100 the CD-1 is also extremely quiet but I suppose it bears saying that there are a great many CDPs at the JD100's price point, and even below it, that are quieter but that nonetheless couldn't hold a candle to the JD100 sonically, IMHO of course.
