Hi-Bit DIRECT OUT feature?

Just picked up a nice, fully functioning Yamaha CDX-720 player. It has a feature on it I'm unfamiliar with called "Hi-Bit DIRECT OUT". Its activated by a push button. Can anybody explain what this feature is used for?
